IPL photofacial

For color rather than texture. Brown spots, redness and broken capillaries respond well. Fine lines and roughness do not, and knowing which problem you have is the whole of choosing this treatment.

What you can see, not what you can feel

The most useful sentence on this page. IPL treats color. It does very little for texture. Almost every disappointed IPL patient booked it expecting the second.

If your complaint is…IPL?What actually treats it
Brown spots, sun damageYesIPL. This is its best case
Diffuse redness, rosacea flushingYesIPL, usually more sessions
Broken capillariesYesIPL or vein laser
Fine lines and crepinessNoErbium or CO2 resurfacing
Rough texture, large poresNoResurfacing or microneedling
Acne scarringNoRF microneedling or CO2
Loose skinNoSkin tightening, not a laser question

Run your fingers over the thing that bothers you. If you can feel it, IPL is probably not the answer; if you can only see it, it probably is. That test is crude and it is right more often than most consultations.

What it costs

  • IPL photofacialper session · 30 min
  • Three-session coursethe usual starting course
  • Five-session coursefor redness and rosacea
  • Laser toning (Q-switch)per session · targeted pigment

Three to five sessions three to four weeks apart is typical. Decades of sun damage do not clear in one visit, and we would rather set that expectation than sell a single session.

IPL is quoted as a course, usually three to five sessions three to four weeks apart. Decades of sun damage do not clear in one visit.

  • We do not bill insurance. No prior authorization, no coverage denial part-way through, and no treatment decision made by a plan rather than by your clinician.

The part people are not warned about

IPL photofacial healing over the first two weeks

Brown spots get darker before they clear. Over the first day or two, treated pigment darkens noticeably, often described as looking like coffee grounds or freckles that have intensified. Then it flakes away over one to two weeks.

That is the treatment working. Patients who were not told tend to conclude their skin has been damaged, and some stop a course that was doing exactly what it should.

Redness responds differently, more gradually, with no visible flaking, which is why it usually takes more sessions to see a clear result.

Most people leave looking mildly flushed and are presentable straight away. That mildness is what makes IPL a reasonable thing to fit around normal life, and it is also why it cannot do what resurfacing does.

Aftercare, which decides the result

  1. Do not pick the flaking pigment

It lifts on its own within two weeks. Helping it along removes skin before it is ready, which is how a clean treatment leaves a mark.

  2. Stop your actives for about five days

Retinoids, acids and exfoliants come out of the routine. Going back to a normal regime too early is the most common self-inflicted problem after any light-based treatment.

  3. Sun protection is the whole game

Freshly treated skin has no defense, and one unprotected afternoon can produce pigmentation that takes months to resolve, undoing precisely what you paid to fix. Daily broad-spectrum SPF, and no deliberate sun between sessions.

  4. No heat for 24 hours

Skip the gym, hot showers and saunas. Heat into freshly treated skin turns ordinary redness into irritation.

Where we are cautious

IPL is broad-spectrum light rather than a single-wavelength laser. That versatility is its strength across several targets and its weakness on deeper skin tones, where the light finds melanin in the skin as readily as in the spot you are treating.

On richer complexions that risks burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which outlasts the original concern by months. We assess Fitzpatrick type before quoting, and where IPL is not the right device we say so and offer an alternative, a longer-wavelength laser, or resurfacing where the concern is really texture. Treating cautiously and hoping is not the same as choosing the right device.

We are also cautious with active tans, recent isotretinoin use, and anyone with a history of melasma, light-based treatment can aggravate melasma rather than clear it, and that is a conversation to have before booking rather than after.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers before you book

How much is an IPL photofacial?

Quoted per session. Most people need three to five sessions spaced three to four weeks apart, and packages are quoted at consultation. Sun damage that has built over decades does not clear in one visit, and a clinic implying otherwise is setting you up to be disappointed.

What does IPL actually treat?

Color. Brown spots and sun damage, diffuse redness, broken capillaries and rosacea flushing. It targets pigment and hemoglobin, the things that make skin look uneven in tone. What it does not treat is texture: fine lines, roughness, enlarged pores and acne scarring are structural, and IPL leaves them essentially untouched.

Is IPL a laser?

No, and the difference matters. A laser emits one wavelength; IPL emits a broad spectrum of light through a filter. That makes IPL versatile across several targets at once and less precise than a laser at any one of them, and it is why device choice and settings matter more on deeper skin tones, where broad-spectrum light finds skin pigment as readily as the spot you are treating.

How many sessions will I need?

Three to five for most people, spaced three to four weeks apart, then occasional maintenance. Redness and rosacea usually need more sessions than brown spots do. We will give you a realistic number after seeing your skin rather than a package price before.

What does the healing look like?

Brown spots get darker before they clear, which surprises people who were not warned. They darken to a coffee-ground appearance over a day or two, then flake off over one to two weeks. Redness responds more gradually with no visible peeling. Most people are presentable immediately and simply look a bit flushed for a few hours.

Does IPL work on darker skin?

It carries real risk on deeper skin tones and we are careful about it. Because IPL is broad-spectrum, it finds melanin in the skin as well as in the spot, and on richer complexions that can cause burns or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation that lasts far longer than the problem being treated. We assess Fitzpatrick type first, and where IPL is not appropriate we will say so and offer an alternative rather than treating conservatively and hoping.

Can I have it in summer?

You can, and it is harder to do well. Treated skin has no defense and tanned skin changes the settings that are safe. If you have active sun exposure planned, either wait or commit properly to avoiding sun and using SPF daily. Undoing an IPL result with one unprotected afternoon is genuinely easy.

IPL or laser resurfacing?

IPL for color, resurfacing for texture. If your complaint is uneven tone and brown spots, IPL is the cheaper and less disruptive answer, with no real downtime. If it is fine lines, roughness or scarring, Erbium or CO2 is what actually addresses it, at a higher price and with real recovery. Many people end up having both, in that order.
