In a nutshell: Our Mission Viejo PRP hair restoration protocol is three sessions four to six weeks apart, then maintenance once every six months. We use a closed FDA-cleared kit, target 5x or higher platelet concentration, and pair every patient with a baseline workup so we are not treating thyroid disease or iron deficiency with platelets. Best responders are men and women with early-to-moderate androgenetic alopecia caught in the thinning phase, not patients with mature bald spots. Series pricing typically runs $1,500 to $2,400 for the initial three sessions.
Mission Viejo is the right place to do this carefully
Our clinic is on Medical Center Road in central Mission Viejo, two minutes off the 5 freeway and adjacent to the Mission Hospital corridor. South County patients are notably proactive about catching hair thinning early, which is the population PRP serves best. The patients who consult with us at 28 to 45, while diffuse thinning is still in progress, get the most useful results. The 65-year-old who has been bald in a region for 15 years is the wrong candidate for any PRP protocol, ours included.
Before you book, read our companion piece on PRP injection cost so you can compare quotes apples-to-apples, and our PRP therapy guide for clinical background.
Our clinic protocol
- Consultation and scalp imaging. Digital photos at standardized angles. Mid-scalp and vertex partings. Trichoscope check for miniaturized hairs.
- Workup. Ferritin, vitamin D, TSH, total testosterone (men) or DHEA-S and androgen panel (women). Hair pull test.
- Series of 3 injections, 4 to 6 weeks apart. 60 mL draw, dual-spin process, scalp infiltration with 27-gauge or microneedling-assisted delivery.
- Photographic recheck at month 4.
- Maintenance session at month 6, then every 6 months.
Each session in clinic runs about 60 minutes door-to-door. Numbing is topical for hair work; we do not routinely use ring blocks for the scalp.
What the evidence says about PRP for androgenetic alopecia
The strongest dataset for PRP is in androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss). A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery pooled randomized controlled trials and reported significant increases in hair density and thickness versus controls (see Gupta and Bamimore, 2020). Effect sizes were moderate, not transformative, and the protocols varied. The honest read: PRP works as an adjunct in early-to-moderate disease. It does not regrow hair on bald scalp.
For male-pattern hair loss we typically combine PRP with FDA-approved minoxidil and, where appropriate, finasteride. For female-pattern hair loss we combine with topical minoxidil and treat any underlying ferritin or thyroid issue first.
Results timeline (what is realistic)
- Weeks 1 to 4: Mild scalp tenderness. No visible change.
- Month 2 to 3: Some patients notice reduced shedding. Photo evidence is not yet meaningful.
- Month 4 to 6: Density improvement on standardized photos in responders. Hair-shaft thickness measurable on trichoscope.
- Month 6 to 12: Peak response. Decision point on maintenance cadence.
Approximately 20% of patients in our hands are non-responders. The clinical predictors of non-response are advanced miniaturization, very low ferritin we cannot correct, and untreated androgen excess in women.

Cost for Mission Viejo patients
We are transparent about kit choice and platelet concentration at the consult. We do not charge separate “draw fees” or “consult fees” on top of the session price.
Are you a candidate?
- Best candidates: Men or women aged 25 to 60 with Norwood I-III (men) or Ludwig I-II (women), visible thinning but not bald patches, no untreated systemic cause.
- Marginal candidates: Patients with traction alopecia, telogen effluvium (these need the trigger treated first), and post-bariatric or post-GLP-1 telogen effluvium.
- Not candidates: Active scalp infection or inflammatory scalp disease, platelet disorders, anticoagulant therapy (we case-by-case), active malignancy, pregnancy.

Mission Viejo FAQ
Is the clinic walking distance from anything?
The Shops at Mission Viejo and Mission Hospital are both within a short drive. Many patients pair their PRP visit with errands at the mall. Parking at our building is free and ground-level.
Can I drive home after a session?
Yes. We use topical numbing only. There is no sedation involved. Patients from Aliso Viejo and Lake Forest typically drive themselves both directions.
Do you have weekend slots for PRP?
Yes. We schedule PRP series on Saturdays for working professionals. Our weekend availability books out 2 to 3 weeks ahead, so plan the series start accordingly.
General FAQ
Does PRP hurt?
Scalp injections are uncomfortable for the first minute of each region, then tolerable. Most patients rate it 4 to 6 out of 10 with topical numbing.
Will my hair fall out before it grows?
A small fraction of patients see transient shedding in weeks 2 to 4. This is consistent with hair-cycle synchronization and is not a sign the treatment is failing.
What about exosomes instead?
Exosomes are not FDA-approved for hair restoration. Some clinics offer them off-label; we are conservative and stick with PRP plus medical therapy that has randomized-trial support.
Can I do PRP if I am on minoxidil and finasteride?
Yes, and we encourage it. Combination therapy generally outperforms PRP alone in studies, and the additive cost is small.
Can I wash my hair after?
Same day if needed, but skip aggressive scrubbing, hot showers, sauna, and dyeing for 24 to 48 hours. No swimming pools for 48 hours.
Will insurance cover any of this?
No. PRP for hair loss is classified as cosmetic by all major payers. HSA/FSA generally does not cover it without a letter of medical necessity, and most plans deny those for hair indications.
